Best Ways to Make New Memories on a Yacht Tour

The fond memories that we make with our friends and family stay with us for a lifetime, and they only get better each time we look back on them. When we’re with the people that we care about the most, it’s as if time stands still and nothing else exists. This is even more true when we’re sharing a breathtaking view, dancing all evening to lively music, or enjoying an incredibly delicious meal together. At Anita Dee Yacht Charters, we can provide all these and more for an experience you and your loved ones will remember for the rest of your lives.

Decide Where You Want to Go and When

This may be the toughest part of planning your luxury yacht tour because Chicago offers so many beautiful views from the water. Whether daytime or nighttime, the Windy City is simply stunning. If you are in the mood for a bright, sunny tour during the day, you can choose a morning or afternoon departure. These are perfect times for appreciating the architecture on the Chicago River or enjoying vast, wide-open lake views.

If you prefer to depart in the evening, you can experience an entirely different ambiance. The sunset views are breathtaking, and once the sun has gone down, you’ll also get to see the skyline illuminated in all its brilliance. On top of this, there is no better place to experience the Chicago Summer Fireworks than from the deck of either of our yachts.

Plan Your Activities

In addition to the time of day and the location for your tour, the activities you plan will be the biggest factor in setting the tone for your event. If you are looking for something active, we offer water sports, including jet-skiing, snorkeling, and kayaking. Maybe you prefer a lively evening celebration to dance the night away, complete with a DJ and open bar. If you are in the mood for something more laid back, you can choose from a sightseeing tour with incredible 360-degree views from the observation deck. You can also select a total relaxation tour so you can leave your stress behind and just unwind out on the water.

Invite Your Friends

Your guests will turn your luxury yacht tour into something special. Whether you have a big or small gathering in mind, we offer two yachts of different sizes. The 120-passenger Anita Dee I is perfect for smaller, more intimate events and features two bars and a dance floor. The 400-passenger Anita Dee II can host a larger party with space for guests on three decks. The Anita Dee II also features a sophisticated piano lounge, a formal dining area, three bars, a dance floor, and even a helicopter pad. No matter which yacht you choose, you can tell your guests to come prepared for an exciting, unique experience.

Let Go and Enjoy Yourself

Everything is set up just right, and all your guests are here, ready to have fun. You’ve planned out each detail, and now it’s time to hand over the reins to us so you can soak it all in. The best way to make new memories today is to be in the moment with your friends and family and to forget anything else even exists.

A great way to do this is to put your phone away and hire a professional photographer instead. You’ll be able to enjoy photos and videos from your yacht tour that will let you relive the experience any time you like. You will also have high-quality images to post on social media, which we recommend doing when you’re back on land at the end of the day. The best and most lasting memories that you’ll make are the ones sharing laughs, telling stories, toasting those closest to you, and letting loose on the dance floor.

Five Best Views of the Chicago Skyline

Populated by iconic buildings like the Willis Tower, the John Hancock Center, and the Tribune Tower, Chicago’s skyline is truly a sight to behold. Thanks to Chicago’s location on Lake Michigan, one of the best places to view the entire cityscape is on the waterfront. Whether you are visiting Chicago or are a local looking to explore new spots in the city, here’s a list of the five most stunning views of Chicago’s skyline from Lake Michigan that you won’t want to miss.

Montrose Harbor

Montrose Harbor, which is home to a bird sanctuary featuring a wide variety of different bird species, is one of the best places on Lake Michigan to get a glimpse of the Chicago skyline. Located to the north of downtown Chicago, Montrose Harbor offers the fullest possible view of the entire cityscape due to its distance from the rest of the city.

Montrose Harbor offers excellent views any time of day, evening, or night.

Adler Planetarium

Adler Planetarium Chicago

The Adler Planetarium offers one of the best views of the entire Chicago city skyline. Even apart from the fantastic views, the planetarium is one of Chicago’s most tourist-friendly places to visit. The Adler Planetarium is also right next to another prime spot on this list, Northerly Island.

While this space can sometimes get crowded due to concerts and other events, you can usually find a spot to take some fantastic landscape pictures of downtown Chicago. Located at the end of Solitary Drive, the Adler Planetarium Skyline Walk is the perfect spot to capture a dramatic photo of the cityscape. We can’t recommend this spot enough.

Northerly Island

Northerly Island is another excellent spot to catch a glimpse of the Chicago skyline. As described above, the island is within walking distance from Adler Planetarium, so there’s no reason not to visit both on the same trip. The best time to visit Northerly Island is at sunset, as the sun sinks in the west behind Chicago’s iconic skyscrapers. Many locals also hang around after sunset during “magic hour” and after dark. If you are driving, you can easily park in the harbor area. Northerly Island is worth the visit, no matter the time of day or the season.

Fullerton Avenue

Locals often cite Fullerton Avenue as the best vantage point for viewing the Chicago skyline. This spot is right on Lake Shore Drive, and although parking can be complicated, the view is absolutely worth it. This is the best spot to get a photo of the John Hancock Center from the side.

31st Street Jetty

The 31st Street jetty is one of the best places to view the skyline if you want to avoid crowds. This rarely-visited spot actually underwent significant renovations recently, and nearby parking is incredibly cheap. While you will need to walk a short distance to the jetty, it offers one of the best views on the Chicago waterfront.

The best times of day to visit the 31st street jetty are at sunrise, sunset, and “magic hour” after the sun goes down.

While there are some magnificent spots to view the Chicago skyline from the waterfront, both north and south of downtown, there’s no better way to truly experience Chicago than by yacht.

Summer is Wedding Season

Summer is here, and while for most people, that means cocktails and days at the beach, for others, it means something so much more: It’s wedding season. Peak wedding season is typically from May to October, with the summer months, like June, being some of the most popular. The warm weather and time off from work and school make this season perfect for gathering family and friends for a once-in-a-lifetime special event.

While the summer has always been a popular time to tie the knot, this summer could be even more popular. With a COVID-19 vaccine accessible and readily available, people are beginning to come out of their COVID hibernation. Weddings that were canceled or shelved because of the virus are now back in the works, and people are anxious to share special moments with one another again.

Whether you are looking for a little luxury or just want to find the perfect intimate setting for close family and friends away from the hustle and bustle of the city, a luxury yacht from Anita Dee Yacht Charters is the perfect venue for you. Take your wedding onto the water with a little help from us. Anita Dee Yacht Charters is Chicago’s premier luxury yacht rental group. Not convinced a yacht is the right venue for you? Check out the pros of getting married on a yacht this summer:

COVID Concerns

Yes, the COVID-19 crisis is improving, but for people still worried or those that are at high risk, a yacht wedding may be the solution you have been looking for. A yacht is a self-contained little world out on the water. You have control over the guest list and can create an intimate affair with only your closest family and friends present. No strangers will wander through a giant hotel or banquet hall where you’re having your celebration, and random people aren’t coming and going. It’s just you, your guests, and our staff. Our yachts even have a complimentary bridal suite where the bride and her attendants can get ready in peace and luxury. A yacht could be your own private sanctuary away from the rest of the world.

One Venue is All You Need

With a yacht, there is no need to waste money on multiple venues. This is the perfect moving location for your wedding and reception. In addition, there aren’t the added worries of transporting people back and forth between locations. You could be married on the deck overlooking the sparkling water as the sun sets behind clouds painted red and gold. Maybe you’d like a cocktail hour on a separate part of the deck, overlooking a different scene. Then perhaps a reception and dancing on another part of the ship. The choices are yours, and you don’t have to feel limited because you are confined to one location. The entire lake and Chicago skyline is your location.

It Can Be All Inclusive

Before you turn into a bridezilla running around trying to secure food, drinks, a location, the photographer, and everything else that comes with planning a wedding, stop and consider an inclusive yacht package. Not only does a yacht provide you with exclusivity and luxury, but it can also take the weight of thousands of decisions off your shoulders.

At Anita Dee Yacht Charters, we have hand-selected the finest Chicago catering, entertainment, and photography options to help you plan the perfect wedding. We’ve done the leg work for you. Just share your ideas with us, and we can help you plan the perfect occasion, minus the stress. From the food to the fun and even a champagne toast, we have you covered so you can focus your attention on more important things, like finding the perfect dress and starting your new life with the one you love.

Big or Small, a Yacht Can Fit Them All

A yacht is no sailboat. Sometimes people are worried that the water vessel just won’t be big enough to accommodate the wedding of their dreams. At Anita Dee Yacht Charters, we have multiple luxury vessels that can accommodate the smallest and most intimate gathering or larger, tour-de-force sized parties.

The Anita Dee I is the perfect choice for smaller gatherings looking for sophisticated luxury and a more intimate setting. We say “smaller,” but the Anita Dee I is still a 90-foot vessel that can accommodate 120 passengers.

The Anita Dee II is a 400-foot, 400 passenger floating behemoth that boasts an elegant piano lounge, formal dining area, open observation deck, and even a helicopter pad. Your imagination is the only thing that can limit you. These vessels are equipped to handle wedding parties, large or small, and you won’t have to limit your guest list (unless you really want to).

Your wedding is a one-of-a-kind event, and you’ve waited a long time to make it special. While celebrating this moment with family and friends is all that matters, here at Anita Dee Yacht Charters, we think you deserve something not only memorable but monumental. That’s why we go out of our way to ensure your special day is just that. Special. Something that you will remember and cherish forever: the people, the faces, and the love.

Stop running yourself ragged trying to pin down all the details on your own. Turn to someone who can do it for you and allow you the peace and tranquility to just enjoy your day.

Set Sail with Man’s Best Friend

Taking to the waters is a fun and relaxing way to get away from it all, but for many people, there is one thing that is missing: their best friend. Today, our pets are more than just four-legged friends. They are integral family members. They bring us unending love, joy, and entertainment.

Yet, when it comes time to embark on a sailing adventure, many people worry that they will have to leave their best buddy behind. This can be heartbreaking for both the animal and its pet parent. Thankfully, you can bring your fur baby with you when you go yachting, but this type of excursion isn’t the same as a road trip to grandma’s house.

If you are ready to take your dog or cat with you out on open water, take some of these tips to heart. They can help make your trip more enjoyable for both you and your four-legged friend.

Start Planning Now

Where are you going? How long will you be away? These are the first questions any well-seasoned traveler contemplates before going traveling. However, these questions are more significant when you are thinking about bringing a pet along for the ride. Planning is the key to a safe and worry-free yachting experience with your pet. Start planning early.

Where are you planning to go? This is crucial because when taking a pet along, there can be extra considerations to make. Will it need a visa or pet passport? What vaccinations will it need, and do those vaccinations need to be updated? Do you need to bring medication? Is your pet updated on tick and heartworm prevention? Have they been microchipped? These are serious questions, and your answers to them may depend on where you are going and what regulations are in place at your destination.

Start by planning your trip and then researching the pet policies in those locations. Then gather your veterinary paperwork and make sure your pet is up to date on everything required. Keep copies of these documents with you when you travel. If your animal needs a pet passport, apply for one as early as possible to avoid the stress of rushing through the process and waiting on documents. Thorough and early planning on your part will make this trip more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Give Animals a Safe Space

Depending on your travel arrangements, make sure that the yacht has a safe space for your friend. It could be in your room or another secure area where the animal can go to feel safe. A bed, soft cushions, a familiar blanket, or favorite toy: make sure they have what they need to curl up and hunker down. You may want to consider bringing a cage, crate, box, or another type of enclosure your pet can crawl into to settle down. Everyone needs a secure area of their own where they can feel safe and snug, no matter what the conditions.

Let Them Get Their Sea Legs

Yes, animals can get seasick. This malady is not exclusive to humans. Even on a yacht, it can take both pets and people a little time to get used to the motion of the waves and gliding through the water. Be patient and plan ahead. Before leaving dry land, talk with your vet about options that may help your fur baby cope with potential sickness.

Sometimes medication may be recommended, either for motion sickness or anti-anxiety. Fill all prescriptions beforehand, and make sure you have enough medication on hand to get you through the duration of your trip. Keep plenty of fresh water on hand, and make sure they stay cool and comfortable. Heat can make nausea worse and lead to vomiting.

Safety Comes First

In addition to medications, make sure that you think about sun protection for your loved one. Pets need shade and sun protection just like people do. Give them access to shady spaces or make sure they have animal-safe sunscreen. Also, make sure they always have a supply of fresh, cool water that they have easy access to. If the deck gets hot, shoes that protect their paw pads can be helpful.

Some owners also have dog and cat lifejackets on hand if the pet likes to explore the deck. Just always make sure that you keep an eye on them. If you are unsure how they may respond to being on deck, keep them leashed. Compiling a little doggie or kitty first aid kit is also a good idea. Keep bandages, anti-bacterial cream, and all your pets’ medications in one handy kit.

Potty Patrol

Waste happens. Some yachts are equipped with faux grass patches where dogs can go about their business. You can also purchase AstroTurf-like pads that are specially designed for animal waste. Be patient. It may feel like you are potty training all over again because, essentially, you are. It may take some time and training for your pet to get used to the situation and start using a specific space as their new toilet. Cats can be a little easier to acclimate. Make sure they have access to a fresh and clean litter box or two and that they know where the litter boxes are located.

Yachting with pets can be a rich and rewarding experience. Not only are you traveling in the lap of luxury, but you are also sharing the adventure with someone you love, someone who will give you unconditional affection the entire journey. You don’t have to be afraid of yachting with your fur baby, as long as you plan ahead and take the necessary precautions to make sure your furry friend stays safe.

The Future of Eco-Yachting

Recently, there has been a renewed push towards becoming more environmentally friendly and reducing our carbon footprint. From biodegradable straws to electric cars, the future is looking green. While there is no plan to return to the days of wooden ships, plant-based ropes, and canvas sails, the yachting industry is taking the eco-movement seriously. Sustainable material options and advances in new technology are making the transition to more environmentally friendly yachts a reality.

That green future is looking brighter and more exciting than ever. Here are some of the eco-friendly advancements that have us at Anita Dee Yacht Charters bristling for more.

New Power for a New Day

Many of today’s yachts are powered by large diesel engines that, of course, consume diesel fuel. While the diesel engines of today are far cleaner and more efficient than those of decades past, they are still powered by fossil fuels, a non-renewable resource. However, the rise in new technology is giving birth to a wide variety of superyachts that are taking advantage of new and more sustainable sources of power.

Yachts utilizing solar panels are already sailing the high seas. These yachts may be eco-friendly and harness the power of the sun, but that doesn’t mean they skimp on luxury. One solar-powered yacht boasts a salon, six staterooms, and unlimited cruising potential. What’s more, because the yacht doesn’t have to house a massive diesel engine, it has more living space available, and there is no engine vibration.

Solar isn’t the only way to go green, though. Engineers are also busy dreaming up ways to use hydrogen to power the superyachts of tomorrow. Advances in technology are making hydrogen fuel cells a more feasible option than they once were. Hydrogen power works through chemical reactions. Pressurized hydrogen interacts with oxygen and creates electricity, although the storage capacity needed for hydrogen can be enormous. One Dutch design studio circumvented this problem by using liquid hydrogen in its design. Although hydrogen-powered yachts are only in the planning and prototype phases, continued advancements in technology are making these ships a more realistic option every day.

Battery-powered superyachts are also on the horizon. Although still in the concept phase, the Ultra2 is billed as a battery-powered, luxury eco-yacht. Again, “eco” doesn’t mean skimping on extravagance. The ship will have space for 14 passengers and 26 crew members, has two pools, an Imax theatre, and room for a helicopter and rescue boat.

While we wait for some of these exciting new technologies to manifest, some yachts are going the way of the car and turning hybrid. These hybrids use both electrical and diesel systems working together to sail the world. The sheer size of a yacht and the power it takes to propel one means that achieving this feat was not easy. There is a delicate balance to uphold, but combining the two systems is showing people that yachts can evolve and that progress is possible.

Sustainable Upgrades

While the power source is a major concern, there are other components of yachts that are getting an eco-friendly upgrade. Take, for example, decking material. Teak has been a popular wood for yacht decks because, while beautiful, it is also extremely durable, water-resistant, pest-resistant, and even rot resistant. However, many species of teak are becoming endangered. The plant is slow to grow, and over-harvesting is threatening teak’s continued survival. This means it’s not a sustainable option.

Lignia is an engineered radiata pine softwood that both appears and functions like a hardwood. Although it looks like teak, it is a much more sustainable option that can handle the rigors of sea life. Switching out an endangered wood for a more environmentally friendly option is just one of the ways that yachts are getting an eco-friendly makeover.

Another way that yachts are getting the green treatment is through the installation of drinking water filtration systems. Sure, plastic water bottles are convenient and easy to carry, but compact water filtration units that can filter out bacteria, pesticides, metals, and microplastics are a much more environmentally friendly option. This gives guests clean and fresh tasting water while limiting the amount of plastic waste on the ship. One way to make this idea fun is to customize reusable water bottles, glasses, or tumblers for the yacht. Everyone can have their own little piece of sustainable luxury.

Upgrades don’t always have to be expensive or extravagant. Even small upgrades and changes in the way yachts collect and dump waste or take advantage of local, sustainable products while in port can make a significant difference. The yacht of tomorrow may be on the horizon, but how we use products and treat the environment today paves the way for those bold innovations.

Looking to the Future

Anita Dee Yacht Charters may be the premier private yacht charter company of Chicago, but we are always interested in what the future of yachting holds. Technological advancements in the industry may start with the superyachts, but eventually, these advancements trickle down the line, and it makes watching progress in the industry fascinating. We are always interested in how these green advancements may help bolster the experiences that we may eventually pass along to our Chicago guests.

At Anita Dee Yacht Charters, giving people exceptional experiences is what we do best. From weddings to corporate events, if you want to make an impression, Anita Dee Yacht Charters is the way to do it. We help you create an unforgettable experience on the water while you sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights. How to Have a Safe Yacht Gathering During the COVID-19 Pandemic

There’s no doubt that COVID-19 has made for a difficult summer in 2020. It can be hard to envision and execute plans with friends, companies, or other groups while maintaining safe distancing and sanitization standards. From restaurants and bars to close friend’s living rooms, many social spaces have become temporarily off-limits.

On the other hand, the pandemic has inspired many people to explore new social spaces. In particular, the great outdoors has served as a popular site for small get-togethers. In the open air and at a safe distance, we can connect with each other in person rather than over the phone or on a screen.

Yachts provide an extraordinary space for such an outdoor gathering. Out on the water, the fresh air is limitless. Plus, there’s no risk of encountering an unexpected crowd of people while aboard a yacht.

Unfortunately, even the best yacht can’t whisk its passengers away from COVID-19. At Anita Dee Yacht Charters, we’ve instituted a few reasonable precautions that can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.

You can also minimize the risk during the planning stage. Here are some recommendations to help keep your yachting guests safe, comfortable, and having fun.

Fine-Tune Your Guest List

As the host of a yacht gathering during the pandemic, your first step towards safety is having a firm grasp on the number of guests you expect. The way you go about this depends on your personal preference.

You might only invite a small circle of friends, or request RSVPs by a certain date prior to the gathering. Either way, make sure to know who’s coming so you can accommodate social distancing.

Of course, even a carefully planned event can face unforeseen circumstances. Maybe your dear friend wants to bring a new significant other, or a cherished employee RSVPs a day late. Do you have to turn these guests away in the name of safety?

Not necessarily. Instead, you could plan for contingencies by building a cushion into your guest list. For example, if your yacht has the capacity for 15 socially-distanced guests, you could start by inviting 10. If it has the space for 30, you could start with 20, and so on.

Tell Your Guests What to Expect

COVID-19 safety is often just a matter of clear communication. If your guests know what to expect upon boarding your yacht, they’re likely to follow your safety requests happily.

Prior to your event, consider sending out an email describing all of the safety guidelines you’ll have in place: masks, social distancing plans, sanitization stations, and any others you feel are important. Not only will this communication alleviate your personal stress at the event, but it will also make guests feel more comfortable about the event.

Luckily, Anita Dee Yacht Charters has a robust list of COVID safety policies to keep our guests safe and comfortable. Read on to discover how choosing one of our yachts can lift some of the weight of safety-planning off of your shoulders.

Arrange Safe Seating

One of the surest ways to promote social distancing at your gathering is to eliminate the choice to be close. By arranging appropriately spaced seating before the event, you can be reasonably confident that guests will remain socially distance even while they kick up their feet.

As per CDC guidelines, you should place any movable seats at least 6 feet from each other. If households or couples are attending, you might choose to arrange some seating in closer pods.

It might be a good idea to hang signage designating social distancing pods for households. Clear signs and intentionally distanced chairs will help remind guests to respect the distance between parties, even when they aren’t sitting.

Encourage Responsible Drinking

When we hit the high seas—or the lake—on a luxurious yacht, many of us like to indulge in a cocktail or two. Unfortunately, during the pandemic, more drinks might spell danger. Our inhibitions lower with the alcohol we consume, so we become more inclined to forget about or shrug off the importance of distancing.

That’s not to say that cocktails, wine, and other drinks need to be off-limits at your gathering. Instead, if you choose to offer alcoholic beverages on your yacht, remind your friends to watch their consumption. We’ll do our best to serve your guests appropriately.

If this sounds uncomfortable, there are alternative strategies you could use to preempt the need to monitor. For instance, you could bring only enough alcohol on board for all 21+ guests to have one to two drinks.

You could also opt for a drink-ticket system. In this scenario, you would give each guest a limited number of tickets to redeem for drinks. This way, guests can enjoy beverages as they please without you having to stress about it.

Choose Anita Dee Yacht Charters

If you choose Anita Dee Yacht Charters for your yacht gathering on Lake Michigan, you can rest assured that your event will proceed in the safest way possible.

We have developed a robust safety protocol to ensure that all guests aboard our yachts can feel secure and relaxed.

This protocol, which is in full accordance with the City of Chicago guidance, includes:

  • Limiting the capacity of the Anita Dee I yacht to 75 guests
  • Limiting the capacity of the Anita Dee II yacht to 100 guests
  • Requiring all guests and staff to wear masks
  • Thoroughly sanitizing the yacht before, during, and following your gathering
  • Installing germ shields at all food and beverage stations
  • Providing plentiful hand sanitizer throughout the yacht
  • Making sure our staff members are wholly dedicated to cleaning and monitoring for safety on the inner and outer decks

If you’re considering a yacht gathering in the coming months, you don’t have to shoulder the stress of COVID-19 safety on your own.

Let Anita Dee Yacht Charters take on the job for you. Fill out our contact form or call us at (312) 379-3191 to inquire about your event today.

Spend the Summer Months Relaxing on the Water

When many people think of summer vacation, they envision themselves lying on a sandy beach soaking up the sun, along with hundreds of other people on the beach doing the same thing. However, these are not normal times. Your precious free time could be spent with your closest family and friends in a much more safe and relaxing setting aboard a chartered yacht from Anita Dee Yacht Charters.

Not only is sailing one of the safest summer activities you can indulge in this year, but it is also good for the mind, body, and soul. Being out in open water and enjoying all of the beautiful sights and sounds can provide the peace of mind you won’t be able to find anywhere else.

Sailing on a gorgeous yacht surrounded by water is also a powerful means to boost creativity and mindfulness. So many well-known creative minds have turned to sailing on yachts as a way to clear their minds for new ideas to flourish. Summertime yachting has been a pastime for innovative artists such as Dr. Dre and Steven Spielberg, to world-changing entrepreneurs like Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

Your Private Summer Getaway

Start your summer off right with a chartered yachting trip. Everyone deserves a break after making it through those bitterly cold winter months, and a day on the water is a fantastic way to set the pace for a productive and enjoyable summer season.

Spending a summer day offshore is a way to ensure a relaxing and fun time will be had by all. Avoid the hustle and bustle of the mainland and sail away on a chartered yacht filled with food, drinks, and good people.

And if you need an additional excuse to escape to the water this summer, consider spending your Labor Day sailing on Lake Michigan and taking in some of the most beautiful sights Chicago and the surrounding areas have to offer.

Amenities and Entertainment on Your Summer Yacht Escape

Ideally, we here at Anita Dee Yacht Charters would love to take care of anything you may need on your summer yacht excursion, but there are a few arrangements you should make before setting sail:

Home to some of Chicago’s most notable architectural achievements like the Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium, Northerly Island is a must-see on the Lake Michigan shore. Here you can also catch a glimpse of Soldier Field, where the Chicago Bears have played all of their home games since the early 1920s.

Navy Pier

Aside from Willis Tower, Navy Pier is among the most iconic destinations along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Sailing to the pier to watch the sunset provides a gorgeous view of the city’s skyline as you watch the sun melt over the horizon, providing the perfect end to an evening on the water.

The 31st Street Beach

The shoreline beaches where Chicago meets Lake Michigan offer fantastic views of the city skyline and seemingly endless lake.

The 31st Street Beach, also known as the Margaret T. Burroughs Beach, is home to breathtaking views of Chicago’s skyline from the south at any time day or night. Sailing along the coastline from north to south will give you a renewed appreciation of Chicago’s beauty from a different point of view.

Grant Park

Should you choose to continue sailing north beyond Northerly Island, Grant Park will begin to open up before your eyes. This 300-acre public park is home to some of Chicago’s most historic buildings and attractions such as the Buckingham Fountain and Cloud Gate Sculpture.

Take to the Water With These Movies

Mutiny on the Bounty

Let’s kick things off with a classic. With all due respect to Brando, we are talking about the 1935 version staring none other than dashing ladies’ man, Clark Gable. If you aren’t familiar with the film or the novel of the same title, Mutiny on the Bounty is the story of the overbearing and cruel captain of the HMS Bounty.

His ship is bound from England to Tahiti, but soon the crew becomes fed up with his tyrannical ways, and his lieutenant stages a mutiny to overthrow him. A tale of treachery, revenge, and the ocean. Where do the crew and the ship end up? Who is left standing in the struggle for power out at sea? You’ll have to watch to find out.

The African Queen

Keeping with the classics, there is the 1951 film The African Queen, starring Hollywood powerhouses Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. Throw two people as different as night and day onto a small steam launch, called African Queen, during the onset of World War I and watch the sparks fly. The dynamic between the two stars is magic to watch on the screen. While the boating scenes may seem lackluster compared to today’s modern movie CGI magic, the characters more than make up for it.

Life of Pi

We hate watching ships go down, especially when it happens in the first half of the movie, but Life of Pi is an exquisite film depicting the life and death struggles of a young man stranded at sea – trapped in his lifeboat with a tiger. This film explores the tired “coming of age” story in a new and dynamic way, set against the backdrop of a beautiful and yet unforgiving world of water.

The visuals are stunning and capture the frightening power and isolation of the open ocean. However, it also shows us the breathtaking beauty of the sea, as well, in a way we so often fail to notice.

Wind wasn’t a huge box office smash, but it is a fascinating movie starring Jennifer Grey of Dirty Dancing fame and Matthew Modine. The movie centers around the 1987 America’s Cup, a yachting race that was held off the waters of Australia. While there is some poetic license – it is a movie, after all – the yacht scenes are nicely done. It is a story not many people outside of yachting circles will know of, but it’s still worth a watch, especially if you have been yearning to get out on the water and experience the waves and maybe a little romance.

In the Heart of the Sea

We can’t talk about boating movies without mentioning the story that may have been the inspiration for one of the most iconic boating novels ever written, Moby Dick. In the Heart of the Sea is a historical film directed by Ron Howard. The story comes from a book about the sinking of an American whaling ship in 1820.

It is this event that is thought to have inspired Herman Melville to write the 1851 classic novel, Moby Dick. A classic tale of man versus nature and man versus himself, an all-star cast leads this movie, which received mixed reviews from critics. Yearning for some action on the water? Give this one a try.

No “boating movie list” could ever be complete without the granddaddy of all boating movies, Titanic. James Cameron spared no expense in recreating the Titanic down to every last rivet, but his attention to detail and painstaking work paid off to the tune of raking in $2.187 billion dollars worldwide, to date. A love story set amongst the backdrop of the ill-fated maiden voyage of the Titanic, this movie reminds us that beauty and pride can be overwhelmed by the wrath of Mother Nature.

More Movie Options

There are a number of great films that we couldn’t put on the list, but honorable mentions go to Pirates of the Caribbean, because who doesn’t secretly love a pirate, The Poseidon Adventure, and of course Jaws. As a matter of fact, we can think of lots of movies that show the beauty and power of the water, but this list is a good start to your boating-filled movie marathon.

Best Sailing Destinations on Lake Michigan

When people think of the word “yachting,” they typically think of sun-drenched sandy beaches, crystal clear blue water teeming with brightly colored fish, and mega-yachts anchored right offshore. People are smiling, sipping fruity cocktails, and smelling like coconut sunscreen.

Here at Anita Dee Yacht Charters, we know that yachting can be all that – and so much more. Chicago is nestled on the shore of Lake Michigan, and for anyone native to the area, you know the Great Lakes are a treasure trove of breathtaking sights and a wealth of sailing lore and legend.

There is a rich history in these waters and a beauty that is just as captivating as what you’d find in any of the more tropical waters. For centuries, sailors have navigated the Great Lakes in search of trade routes and goods that could help them make their living. What they left us is even more valuable – rich stories and legends intermingled with sights you’ll remember forever. These are some of the best sailing destinations in Lake Michigan.

Navy Pier

Let’s begin in our own backyard, Navy Pier, which dates back more than 100 years. There is no shortage of fun for all ages at this destination, one of Chicago’s most celebrated entertainment hubs. There are rides and games, cruises, and public art exhibitions that celebrate the rich naval history of the area, plus more contemporary artistic endeavors.

In case you work up an appetite exploring all the sites at the pier, there is an abundance of restaurants to cater to any taste and, of course, plenty of shopping. Let’s not forget one of the most popular attractions at Navy Pier, the biweekly Summer Fireworks show. This amazing display is synchronized to music on Lake Michigan and is a must-see event if you are in the area from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Chicago Harbor Lighthouse

Just east of the busy and bustling Navy Pier is the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in 1893 for the World’s Columbian Exposition before it was moved in 1919 to its present site. In 1925, the steam fog signal was replaced by an air diaphone one to increase its range on the water. Today it is an automated active lighthouse with modern technology that hasn’t lost its sense of history.

Bowers Harbor

Amidst the calm waters along the west coast of Lake Michigan sits Bowers Harbor. These relatively peaceful waters offer wonderful views and a perfect place to relax and take in the sights. Bowers Harbor boasts an amazing onshore history, as well, like the Bowers Harbor Inn. Built as a private residence back in 1928, it has since been renovated into a restaurant, but still holds the charm of the past. Bowers Harbor also has its own vineyard, in addition to the beautiful Bowers Harbor Park and Lighthouse Park.

Beaver Island

Towards the north end of Lake Michigan, you’ll find Beaver Island. This area is an outdoors man’s paradise. Also known as America’s Emerald Isle, Beaver Island is the largest island in Lake Michigan. Not only are there the expected fantastic spots for fishing, but there are also great areas for scuba diving and snorkeling. The island itself has abundant hiking trails, and its own unique version of Stonehenge called the Stone Circle. It is also one of the best places in the U.S. for stargazing because of its isolated location and dark skies.

Indiana Dunes National Park

Looking to enjoy the water and the sand? You don’t need a ticket to Florida, look no further than Indiana Dunes National Park, situated on the southwest coast of Lake Michigan just 50 nautical miles from Chicago. There are picture-perfect images of blue water lapping against soft sand along the park’s 15 miles of shoreline. There are plenty of outdoor activities, hiking trails, geocaching, and a host of other special interests.

There are also a number of secluded spots on the water that offer nothing but peace and solitude for those looking to get away from it all. This park has something for everyone. It is a diverse natural landscape that is well-deserving of a spot on our list.

Great Travers Bay

We admit it, the Great Lakes have a reputation for being unforgiving in times of inclement weather. They can be some of the roughest waters to cross, and there are numerous shipwreck stories to prove it. Nestled in a well-protected area is Grand Traverse Bay, where the water is calm pretty much year-round.

The bay is filled with ports worth exploring like Traverse City, which claims to be the Cherry Capital of the World due to their abundant cherry orchards lining the bay. Not to be outdone, there are also grapes that produce a healthy wine scene in the area, as well. There are smaller historic ports worth exploring. You’ll even find the town of Charlevoix, the old stomping grounds of a young Ernest Hemingway.
